Burlington Historical Society
The Burlington Historical Society was incorporated in 1964. A movement was underway at that time to tear down the West School, the little one-room schoolhouse built in 1794 during the presidency of George Washington. So, in 1964, in order to save and preserve a bit of Burlington’s history, a group of concerned citizens grouped together and formed the Historical Society.
Today, the West School remains a treasured landmark on the corner of Francis Wyman Road and Bedford Street and is historically significant as a rare, Federal Period One-Room Schoolhouse. The school is one of Burlington’s first restored historic structures and is the birthplace of Burlington’s historic preservation movement in the1960s.
